For those who have already finished their fantasy basketball drafts for the upcoming season, the New Orleans Pelicans regrettably announced Monday afternoon that forward Zion Williamson will miss six to eight weeks after undergoing surgery on his right knee to repair a torn meniscus.

According to New Orleans coach Alvin Gentry, it’s believed the injury occurred during an Oct. 13th matchup against the San Antonio Spurs

The rookie will miss about 20 total games this season, and that timetable suggests his return would arrive by Christmas Day. Just in time to take the floor against the Denver Nuggets.

As this past April’s top pick in the NBA Draft, Zion’s much-anticipated regular season debut will have to wait for fans, media, and the rebuilding Pelicans franchise. Dating back to high school, the phenom has generated considerable media attention for his dunking exploits, as well as his athletic ability and strength for such a young player.

Newly-acquired Pelicans guard J.J. Redick dished out his take on the injury, and according to ESPN says, “We have a deep team. We’ll hold it down as best we can without him. Obviously we need him back and hopefully he takes his time and recovers fully.”

Through four preseason games, Williams’ fandom continued to grow as he paired highlight-reel dunks and an impressive stat-line (23.3 ppg, 6.5 rpg, 71.4 fg %) together, while also managing to dominate an in-game matchup with reigning Defensive Player of the Year, Utah Jazz forward Rudy Gobert.
